happy birthday! cards!

IMG_4256 there are a handful of very very special people who have birthdays in march, and this year i decided to make some custom hand lettered birthday cards to send their way. orange and white, with some very cool gold metallic gel ink on the envelopes. these aren't up in the shop, but if you're looking for something to help say, 'hey! you! i'm so glad you were welcomed onto this planet when you were!' - well, i'd love to help make that happen.

holiday! holiday! gifts! gifts!

IMG_4021 i'm thinking about holiday season much differently this year. yes, for the past few seasons, i've tried hard as i could to buy local, handmade, artist-created wares, goods, artwork. i've even tried making things for loved ones. this year, i'm going to focus on simple. very simple. well-chosen words, photographs, pictures, drawings, paper. ordinary things made more beautiful by a new, vibrant approach. maybe an intriguing postcard acutely placed in a gorgeous frame. or a set of vintage silverware with the handles dipped in paint.

along these same lines, in the etsy shop, i'm currently offering simple, hand-lettered quotes on 8x10 paper. whatever quote, saying, words you can think of will be transposed in my calligraphy and sent to you, ready to be gifted, (or framed, and then gifted. or wrapped around something else, and then gifted. or kept for yourself). i figured this was a lovely, cost-effective way to gift my love of lettering to holiday celebrants everywhere.

it's early, yes, but think how much more you'll be able to enjoy your egg nog and ugly sweater parties knowing your holiday shopping is all done (and looking pretty beautiful, if i say so)? cheers!

Phew! August is already more than halfway over, and it seems crazy to me that so much has happened in the first 19 days of this summery month. Renovating and revamping a gallery space in Pilsen, frantically making work for the Chicago Arts District 2nd Fridays Art Walk, hanging the show, frantically making more work for the Pilsen Unisono Festival, designing a mini jilly ink booth, teaching painting classes, planning for the next three months at the gallery, putting together some exciting editorial work for magazines, commercial work for clients, and plugging away at the upcoming designs from the jilly ink wedding stationery line - this has been one crazy month, to say the least.

The thing is, though, I'm realizing I wouldn't have it any other way. Ok, maybe with a little less pressure, but honestly, the deadlines, the excitement, the collaboration, planning, productive daydreaming, painting - living fully in everything I'm passionate about is so incredibly exhilarating. I'm so pleased to share with you the work that made it into the gallery for the month of August.

And! Look for some pretty/strange/pretty strange skull prints to be popping up in the jilly ink Etsy shop this week as well!

a different way to say i love you

valentine's day is right around the corner. of course, how could anyone miss it? as soon as the last of the confetti was thrown from rooftops on new year's eve, pink heart-shaped pieces of construction paper began to line the windows of nearly every store - from nail salons to the corner deli to every stationary shop in this town. while i don't quite agree with the amount of pressure that these two back-to-back holidays inevitably assume, i do always think any inclination to let the people in your life know how much you love and appreciate and value and lust after them is good. so, without further ado, the jilly ink valentine suite, currently available in the shop:

movin on over

hello darling readers! it's been almost a year now since i got my very first tattoo, and first tattoo design request, and this has prompted a massive revamp in my life and career. i could never have foreseen just how much my life has been shaped by starting down the path of custom calligraphy and illustrative work. it's always been something i do because i love it, because it's somewhat natural, because while i'm a writer, sometimes drawing helps me better express what it is i'm trying to share. and now, having jumped down the rabbit hole, i'm so pleasantly surprised and emboldened by the fact that this could all actually lead me somewhere. i'm so grateful for the support and love of friends and family to push me further down the hole, to widen it, deepen it, feel around in all corners and crevices for new or more powerful ways to build upon the strengths i already have. in that vein, i've begun to build two separate websites - www.jillianschiavi.com will house all of my personal artistic work, writing, installations, as well as information about my yoga teaching. www.jillyink.tumblr.com will house all things jillyink - from tattoo designs to other freelance calligraphy/illustration work. take a look around both sites; they're both in progress (especially the tumblr page), but i'm very excited about the possibilities to come from both arenas.

spooky address stamp

i had so much fun designing this return address stamp. a dear friend of mine wanted to give a gift that spoke to this couple's love of all things halloween and 'day of the dead'. is it a coincidence that their last name also fits into this theme? i'm not sure, but i sure love how this all came together! happy stamping!

tattooing like whoa

these are all currently up on my tumblr and instagram (@jillyink) accounts, but i thought it'd be a good idea to post them here too - i'd love to share with you all the plethora of custom tattoo designs i've been drawing for people all over the world in the last few weeks. here we go!

{'wait and hope' for reed dunn}

{'friendship: one mind, two bodies' for two best friends}

{infinity symbol with 'memere' and '1.23' to commemorate kate lindsley's grandmother}

{'life/love' infinity symbol with feather detail for megan quesenberry}

{'non est ad astra mollis e terris via' translation: 'there is no easy path from earth to the stars' for shannon}

{'time bomb' last-minute design for megan holly}

this is all so surreal, and amazing. i love being able to share what i love with so many people. keep the commissions coming! more calligraphy, wedding-style, is on the way as well! cheers.

tattooed in uganda

(His angels will guard us in all our ways - for melinda ozongwu)

the other day, a lovely woman named melinda emailed me from uganda. she was on her way to london, and while there, was planning to get a phrase tattooed on her forearm. the design was finalized, the appointment was made, everything was ready. and then, so she says, she stumbled upon this blog. and overhauled her entire design. what an honor it was to take up the task of creating something she could really fall in love with. something that she'd look at every day, and know that taking the extra steps to make it perfect was well worth it. personally, i think it looks just lovely.

getting inky

(earth, wind, fire, water, moon - for alex raffael)

sometimes how we envision things happening doesn't end up being the case. in fact, this happens most of the time. if, a year ago, someone was to tell me i'd be receiving weekly commissions to draw and design words and pictures that people all over the world would be permanently marking themselves with, i'd have thought that sounded amazing, and completely unbelievable. well, now, just seven months after designing my own, first tattoo, i am happily occupied with translating ideas, words, and images into tattoos. i love it. of course, now i can't imagine not thinking of this in the first place.

Image

(tattooed version of this design - for jessica silva)

here are a few recent tattoos that i've designed, and as always, i welcome many more to come.

('bird' - for katie prange)

(meaning 'to live life passionately and unafraid - for megan mateer)

a very 'creative' tattoo design

this is the highest honor - to be able to design something so personal for someone else that they'd want to, they'd plan to put it on their body permanently. the other day, a lovely lady named jenifer contacted me via etsy to ask if i could design the word 'create' in the same manner as the 'love stamp' that's currently for sale in my shop. just two short days later, we came to a final decision - and just in time, since she's got a tattoo appointment today!

congratulations jenifer, and thank you for allowing me to be a part of this moment!

danielle and bobby: envelopes are on their way

my darling, lovely, hilarious, gorgeous cousin danielle is getting married this coming june to an equally wonderful, funny, fun, handsome fellow, and they asked me to help in the preparations by addressing their wedding invites. this being something i love, of course i said yes! here are the final envelopes, about to be packed up with a bow and shipped back to massachusetts where they'll be stuffed and sent out to the world. many many congratulations to danielle and bobby - i can't wait to see them tie the knot this spring!

soiree!

i'm so honored and excited to participate as a vendor in soiree events' 'leap into wedding season' event tomorrow night at chicago's fleur de lis florist in river north. the darling tiffany munster, brains and beauty behind soiree, asked me to provide calligraphy for the bridal grab bags - a cute play on the something borrowed, something blue, something old, something.. well, you know. here are the scans of the calligraphy - she'll be printing the e.e. cummings poem on cute little cards, attaching the something borrowed to an adorable little 'emergency kit', and as for the rest, well you'll find out when i do!

for all brides that are attending the event, i'm offering a free custom return address stamp with the purchase of custom address calligraphy for 100 or more wedding invitation envelopes. i'm looking forward to meeting the other lovely vendors, trying some cake, and spending the evening at a decked-out decadent soiree!

all you need is love is all you need

if you too live in chicago, then can i just start by saying, my goodness, how gorgeous is this weather? i'm seriously smitten with the sun right now.  and speaking of smitten, here are some lovely love stamps for a love-filled month, available over on my etsy shop. grab one, stamp some valentines, or maybe even your own valentine, and spread the love.

permanent ink: a portuguese-inspired tattoo

i was so pleased, totally surprised and completely flattered by the email i received from an old high school friend (and former mhs soccer teammate), asking if i would help create a tattoo out of a poem she'd written to honor her parents, her heritage, and love. 'of course,' i exclaimed! this is really special - she wants two acrostic poems woven into the shape of a heart, with each half of the heart for each foot, the point meeting down by her toes. the poem is written in portuguese, and it reads:

meu

amor

eternal

pessoa

amada

incondicionalmente

and it means, "mae" (mother) - my eternal love/"pai" (father) - loved unconditionally

i'm so honored to be a part of this - thank you jess, and i can't wait to see the permanent version!

and tattooed in texas

the stars must be aligned.. just two weeks after i designed and got my very own, very first tattoo (post to come), i received a very cool email from a very cool lady down in dallas, texas, asking if i've ever considered designing one for someone else. 'why, of course!' i exclaimed, and there began our adventure in finding something that utilized my script, her three children's names (madelyn, mitchell and merritt - adorable), and a feeling of 'whimsy'. after a few back-and-forths, here's the final design. just like my dear friend adam's tattoo (which was inked this morning over in thailand!), i can't wait to see the design in its permanent home, on her forearm. thank you valerie, for allowing me to be a part of this amazing process!
