a different way to say i love you

valentine's day is right around the corner. of course, how could anyone miss it? as soon as the last of the confetti was thrown from rooftops on new year's eve, pink heart-shaped pieces of construction paper began to line the windows of nearly every store - from nail salons to the corner deli to every stationary shop in this town. while i don't quite agree with the amount of pressure that these two back-to-back holidays inevitably assume, i do always think any inclination to let the people in your life know how much you love and appreciate and value and lust after them is good. so, without further ado, the jilly ink valentine suite, currently available in the shop:

spooky address stamp

i had so much fun designing this return address stamp. a dear friend of mine wanted to give a gift that spoke to this couple's love of all things halloween and 'day of the dead'. is it a coincidence that their last name also fits into this theme? i'm not sure, but i sure love how this all came together! happy stamping!

danielle and bobby: envelopes are on their way

my darling, lovely, hilarious, gorgeous cousin danielle is getting married this coming june to an equally wonderful, funny, fun, handsome fellow, and they asked me to help in the preparations by addressing their wedding invites. this being something i love, of course i said yes! here are the final envelopes, about to be packed up with a bow and shipped back to massachusetts where they'll be stuffed and sent out to the world. many many congratulations to danielle and bobby - i can't wait to see them tie the knot this spring!

gifting the stamp: chris and robin wright

i had the most lovely request while i was home in massachusetts two weeks ago: to design a stamp as a gift to a very special sister.  i more than happily spent one of the rainier days inside with my puppy, drawing up different variations for chris and robin wright's columbus, ohio address, and the result was met with smiles on the faces of the sisters; the sender and receiver both.

a southern stamp - makenna and yvonne johnston

it was such a pleasure working with makenna on creating a return address stamp for her and yvonne.  originally she wanted a custom initial stamp with both of their first initials, but after a while changed her mind and went for the full address. i think it came out beautifully, and i can just imagine the many envelopes and packages that it will adorn!

a windy city kind of stamp - ashlie and bryan karns

i love love love getting requests from people to make a stamp, either on or off my etsy shop, and then seeing where they're coming at me from.  some from far away (a macon, georgia return address is in the works), and some, surprisingly, from just around the block.  ashlie just recently moved to chicago from new york, and wanted her new home address at the ready when she arrived - presumably to use on some 'we've moved!' announcements - so voila!  all wrapped up in jillyink packaging, here's ashlie and bryan's new return address stamp:

ashlie was such a pleasure to work with, and i wish her and bryan all the best in their new home - especially now that chicago's warmed up quite a bit!

just get through tomorrow

eeeeeeeesh i haven't been here in a while.  i'm so sorry!  what with getting writing pieces ready for the saic grad critique week and finishing final screenprinting projects, running the mothers' day 5k (i came in 255 out of nearly 2,000 runners!) in grant park and work, i've been up to my ears in busyness.. and business. some good news!  i've recently had two (two!) new purchases from my etsy shop, which i am incredibly excited about.  one of my lovely clients initially decided to purchase a custom initial stamp, however she's since chosen to go the return address stamp route, but i'd still like to show you my designs for the first:

it gives me incredibly joy to have make connections with wonderful people via the online handmade community, and i look forward to continue 'meeting' new people (and hopefully more people) as the summer approaches!

the most productive snow day ever

so you know how i've been saying for about a year now that i'm planning on starting an etsy shop?  and you know how it's been nearly a year, and nary an etsy shop has been in site?  and furthermore, you know how one of my new year's resolutions is to have more integrity, do things i say i'm going to do?  well, you might know, if you watch the news or if you've looked out your window at all in the past two days, that chicago's just been hit with a tidal wave of snow.  which means no school.  which means no real homework to take care of.  which means plenty of time to spend on...

...my brand new etsy shop!  finally i pulled everything together and put it up.  it goes by the same name as this here ole blog, so you all won't have to remember too many differences.  currently there are four listings:

custom initial stamps, as in the one i made for a dear lululemon compatriot of mine this past holiday season

custom return address stamps, as in the ones i made for two of the weddings i attended last summer

modern invitation calligraphy,(custom, too!) as in all those envelopes i addressed for wedding and bridal shower guests the last time it was actually warm outside

i'm incredibly excited, and i've already had a purchase - by none other than the lovely miss knight herself.  so spread the word and enjoy taking a look around at my handwritten wares.  thundersnow - you were good for something!

sprung

yes dear readers, the time has finally come.  the last dredges of post-snowstorm glomp have been washed into sewer drains, the rock salt has de-rooted itself from the bottom of my black boots, the five-dollar sunglasses have been fished from the back of desk drawers (thankfully still in one piece). spring has arrived in new york. and i can't tell you what a difference that has made.

starting in about 2 weeks, i'll be embarking on a new kind of journey, involving inky pens, card stock, twine, manilla file tags, illustrated paper and a brand new etsy shop for jillyink.  yes yes, i'm taking the plunge into business/venture/life ownership.  and hopefully, with enough optimism and focus and a few encouraging first gigs, this little light of mine will keep on shining (and paying for the electric bill...)!  i hope you're all excited, as i'll be documenting the process of starting an etsy shop and whatever/wherever this journey takes me.

in the meantime, outside into the sun i go!
