gaga for gatsby

recently i was asked (by the lovely ladies of soiree weddings & events) to contribute to a 20s themed wedding vendor spotlight in honor of the highly anticipated dicaprio and mulligan great gatsby premier. i couldn't have been more excited. if i could pick any other era to live in, it would definitely have been the golden, roaring, fringe and feather, pearl and diamond clad 1920s (new york or paris, that's the real question). in preparation for the chalkboard lettering, i started doing some research on art deco fonts, and discovered a few that i immediately fell in love with. herewith - the ones i drew inspiration from, along with some deco-esque lines and accoutrements:

i'm now thoroughly obsessed with art deco lettering. i'm sure you'll see more inspiration and influences on here in the future. until then, go get yourselves some tickets to the great gatsby (opening tomorrow!) - it was simply splendid, gorgeous, and full of life.

not only did she skillfully, masterfully, creatively, thoughtfully and, yes, magically produce perhaps the world's most celebrated and cherished, influential and insightful work of art, but ms. rowling herself continues to be an inspiration for all young women and girls who seek a world built on valuing their individualism and self-worth, not their outward aesthetic: 'Maybe all this seems funny, or trivial, but it’s really not. It’s about what girls want to be, what they’re told they should be, and how they feel about who they are. I’ve got two daughters who will have to make their way in this skinny-obsessed world, and it worries me, because I don’t want them to be empty-headed, self-obsessed, emaciated clones; I’d rather they were independent, interesting, idealistic, kind, opinionated, original, funny – a thousand things, before ‘thin’. another little alice

i'm in love with stop-motion videos, and have become increasingly intrigued with just how exactly they're made.  this one in particular, found via lobster and swan, is gorgeous and sweet and silly.  from the styling to the music (by alison kudol of a fine frenzy) and whimsy that permeates the story, angela kohler and her boyfriend ithyle have really created a beautiful sequence that i would very much like to curl up and take a ride through myself. another bus ride home

thoughts on a bus ride: 'away we go' is an excellent driving movie (well, it's an excellent movie regardless... let it be known that i would someday love to work with both john krasinski and dave eggers on a film).

don't ever forget a second snack - that back half of a four hour long ride can be brutal without something sugary to savor.

'death cab for cutie' and 'kaki king' can make even the most fitful of bus sleepers doze off within minutes.  they also provide beautiful soundtracks for motion dreams.

even when you think that, because it's the dead of winter and you're traveling up further north, the bus will be warm inside, bring an extra sweater, scarf, blanket, space heater, because it most certainly will still be freezing.

the outside seat is better for long legs and spontaneous trips to the can.  then again, the inside seat is better for makeshift coat pillows to lean up against.  then again, the outside seat is usually warmer, being further from the cold window.  then again, the inside seat provides more privacy.  then again they both are sort of terrible.

the bus will never be as comfortable as the train, and the train will never be as cheap as the bus.

at least it now has wifi!  about two hours away now, and i'm greatly looking forward to that great big glass of wine awaiting my arrival at home.  massachusetts, here i come.

on the road again

so after a wonderfully relaxing weekend at home in massachusetts, a weekend filled with a 5am wake up call in the form of thousands of white-dress-hungry future wives at the twice annual 'running of the brides' event in boston, steven tyler-obsessed cover bands at the green fest in boston's gov't center, a late night time traveler's rendition of a most beloved book, a thunderstorm-riddled pick up at the beach and subsequent changing of a redundant swim suit, and more ben & jerry's than i've eaten through the entire summer thus far, i am on my way back to an equally heated and humid city, new york.  it doesn't seem like the end will be near anytime soon, however, as from my seat onboard megabus the line of cars in front of us along route 95 stretches far beyond the horizon.  and so i'm attempting to watch brideshead revisited (although the internet keeps slowing, causing the movie to pause every minute and  half), and research places to go in san francisco this week when i fly out there.  anyone have any favorites? so while i try to keep occupied and not think of the hours ahead of me on this lurching vehicle, i'll leave you with another new illustration for the sketchbook project.  this is for my very good friend jessie's page - she's ever growing in talent, creativity, friendship, life, love and everything beautiful, just as i think of the roots and branches and flowers and leaves of an oak tree.  this will be filled in soon, but here is the initial skeleton:

just a quick plea that everyone run right out tomorrow and go see 'julie and julia', the meryl streep/amy adams masterpiece that weaves the illustrious and expansive life of julia child with the somewhat sniveling and snarky, yet still redeemably adorable events of the year in which julie powell succeeded in cooking her way through mrs. child's legendary book, 'mastering the art of french cooking'.  i have always been in love with julia.  i can remember gathering around the television with my whole family on sunday mornings to watch her charming and quirky cooking show (followed, of course, by the frugal gourmet - another of my favorites!).  is it any wonder then that whenever i decided (or decide - i still do it to this day) to put on a 'live cooking demonstration' in our kitchen myself, i found myself not only attempting to mimic julia's extensive knowledge of culinary finesse, but also her incredibly recognizable falsetto?  i love the power she held on screen, even in her later years when she would simply stand by and watch other master chefs who'd been invited to cook with or for her.  her presence was undeniable.  she was unapologetic both in cooking and in life, and i can only hope to possess the amount of unfailing confidence and 'courage of conviction' that guided her through foreign lands and trying times.  

the movie was absolutely lovely.  both meryl streep and amy adams were perfect in their roles.  and the food.  oh the food.  thank goodness nora ephron hired herself a phenomenal food stylist, because i've been harboring a massive craving for anything with butter and cream and a side of light and crispy french bread.  dinner tonight is much anticipated.
